In light of his dislocated shoulder, today’s summit finish was a big test for the Maglia Rosa. However, despite a fearsome pace set by Astana, and an attack by Fabio Aru on the final climb, Alberto Contador, and his shoulder, were up to the challenge of defending his general classification lead.

Approaching the first summit finish of this year’s Giro, the peloton almost managed to hoodwink us all into believing that today, at last, we’d see things settle down to something approaching normality. A small, focused breakaway group had a convincing lead, and Orica-Greenedge controlled the pace behind. But then, just as the gradient reached its most challenging, Alberto Contador decided to tear up the script once more.
