Approaching the first summit finish of this year’s Giro, the peloton almost managed to hoodwink us all into believing that today, at last, we’d see things settle down to something approaching normality. A small, focused breakaway group had a convincing lead, and Orica-Greenedge controlled the pace behind. But then, just as the gradient reached its most challenging, Alberto Contador decided to tear up the script once more.

Nerves, excitement, and momentary inattention are the usual hallmarks of the first sprinters stage in a grand tour, and this Giro was really no different as we saw several crashes pepper the stunning Ligurian coastline. When the peloton finally made it to the finish line in Genoa, it was Team Sky’s Elia Viviani who took an impressive win, in a sprint that was as strong as it was clever.
